About Triangle Youth Music

Today, Triangle Youth Music has grown into a vibrant, multi-level youth music education organization, sponsoring five orchestras, four jazz bands, several smaller ensembles, and an after-school beginner violin program in two Title I elementary schools. Serving over 500 musicians year-round, TYM provides supportive, non-competitive training for beginners, alongside elite ensembles for dedicated young musicians selected through a rigorous audition process. The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble has earned national recognition, with eight invitations to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Festival and Competition, affirming its place among the top 15 jazz bands in the country. The Triangle Youth Philharmonic proudly serves as the official youth orchestra of the North Carolina Symphony.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Triangle Youth Music recognizes that our musical ensembles need unique instruments and

unique players. We thrive on diversity of skills, talent, and creativity, reflecting our individual
and collective expressions. We are committed to providing an open space where our musicians
can excel.

History

In early 1988, thirty-five high school musicians from North Carolina’s Triangle area came together to form a symphony orchestra. They invited Hugh Partridge, Principal Violist of the North Carolina Symphony, to be their conductor and help establish the Triangle Youth Philharmonic. After their inaugural concert on May 22, 1988, the Philharmonic Association (now Triangle Youth Music) was officially formed, and the Triangle Youth Philharmonic quickly expanded into a full symphony orchestra. Our jazz program was introduced in 2005 when student musicians were invited to perform at Raleigh’s Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration. Since then, TYM has collaborated with numerous local and national arts organizations, including the Cary Ballet, Raleigh Youth Choir, and Jazz at Lincoln Center, enriching the musical experiences of thousands of young musicians in the community.
